Study finds sexting may be a new normal behaviour

SEXTING may now be just another part of dating for young adults who have grown up with smart phones and social media, a study has found.
Researchers from the University of Michigan studied the behaviour of 3447 young adults aged between 18 and 24 and found that sexting is very common and mostly harmless.
The study, in the Journal of Adolescent Health, contradicts the broader public perception of sexting, saying the behaviour does not correlate with risky sexual behaviours or psychological problems.
Researchers say it is another matter for younger age groups where legal and sexual development issues emerge.
But assistant professor Jose Bauermeister said the portrayal of sexting in the media and health services as unsavoury, deviant or even criminal may be unfair for young adults.
The study looked at how sexting impacted the health and life of young-adult participants.
It found nearly half of the participants had engaged in sexting, and most of those who did said it was a reciprocal exercise with their romantic partners.
Researchers asked about the number of partners participants in the study had been with and whether or not they had had unprotected sex .
The study also found no greater levels of depression, anxiety or low self-esteem among those who engaged in sexting, Bauermeister said.

James Holmes had been seeing psychiatrist before Colorado shooting

ACCUSED Colorado movie theatre shooter James Holmes was being treated by a psychiatrist at the university at the time of the massacre, a court has been told.
The motion named Dr. Lynn Fenton as defence lawyers sought to gain access to a package James Holmes had mailed to her prior the July 20 mass shooting, which also wounded 58 people.
Reports surfaced Wednesday that Holmes - who recently dropped out of the University of Colorado - had sent a notebook to a university psychiatrist that included details and drawing of his plans to kill people.
There were conflicting reports about whether the package reached the school in time to potentially prevent the massacre, but officials remained tight-lipped due to a strict gag order imposed by the judge overseeing the case.
Judge William Sylvester unsealed some court filings on Friday after defence lawyers argued that Holmes's constitutional rights had been violated by the "breach of confidentiality and privilege" and sought "sanctions for this misconduct".
In a preview of likely battles to come, the defence lawyers also argued that the contents of the package should not be used as evidence because "Mr Holmes was a psychiatric patient of Dr Fenton, and his communications with her are protected."

Fenton teaches at the University of Colorado's medical school and heads student mental health services there in addition to conducting research into schizophrenia and other mental illnesses.
Prosecutors rebuffed the defence motion, arguing that news stories about the package contained significant factual errors and that there was no evidence the government was responsible for the leaks.
They also indicated that a FoxNews.com report that the package contained a notebook "full of details about how he was going to kill people" was incorrect.
Reports that the police "are currently examining the contents of the box" are "untrue, as the contents were secured and not examined," prosecutors said.
Holmes, who was studying neuroscience in a doctoral program at the University of Colorado Denver, is expected to be formally charged at his next court hearing on Monday.
Sylvester ordered a hearing on the defence motions also be held on that day.

Colorado Shooting

The alleged gunman gained access to the movie theatre in Aurora, Colorado outside Denver via a fire exit shortly after the screening of The Dark Knight Rises began and threw two canisters of noxious gas into the auditorium, witnesses said.
After firing one round directly into the air with a pump-action shotgun, he began shooting people at random with a military-style assault rifle capable of firing 50 to 60 rounds a minute.
Authorities say Holmes - who had dyed his hair a reddish orange - claimed he was the Joker, Batman's sworn enemy in the comic book series that inspired director Christopher Nolan's film trilogy, which features British-born actor Christian Bale as "the caped crusader."
He gave himself up outside the cinema, still clad in the body armour witnesses described the gunman wearing.
Authorities said Holmes booby-trapped his apartment with the aim of killing anyone who went outside, likely targeting police and first responders.
It was days before neighbours were allowed back in the three-story building.
Holmes, 24, is being held in solitary confinement at the Arapahoe County Detention Center and could face the death penalty if convicted, although Colorado has only executed one person since capital punishment was reinstated in 1976.

N Korean leader 'married in 2009'

Kim Jong-Un Ri Sol-Ju North Korea

NORTH Korean leader Kim Jong-Un has reportedly been married since 2009 and his wife once visited South Korea.
A Seoul lawmaker made the claim a day after the secretive North first disclosed the match.
Kim has been the subject of intense foreign interest since he took over the impoverished but nuclear-armed nation after his father Kim Jong-Il died suddenly last December.
But even his exact age is unknown outside the North, although he is thought to be in his late twenties, and his marriage to Ri Sol-Ju had been a closely guarded secret.
Legislator Jung Chung-Rai, citing what he said was information given to a closed parliamentary session by the South's National Intelligence Service (NIS), said Ms Ri was born in 1989 and had studied singing in China.
Ms Ri visited Incheon, west of Seoul, in September 2005 as a member of her country's cheering squad for the Asian Athletics Championships, Jung said.
An NIS spokesman declined to disclose what was said in the closed meeting.
The North's regime is bitterly hostile to the South's government, threatening "sacred war" over perceived insults to the Kim dynasty, which has ruled the North since its founding in 1948.
Ms Ri, a stylish short-haired young woman usually wearing high heels, has been pictured several times this month accompanying Kim, sparking fevered speculation outside North Korea as to her identity.
The North's state media disclosed Wednesday she is his wife, without giving further details, but the mere fact that the couple were pictured in public marked a new departure for the regime.
The state news agency said the pair enjoyed a song-and-dance performance in the capital Pyongyang.
Kim's youth and inexperience have raised questions about the country's second dynastic succession.
In public, he has presented a relaxed and confident image in an apparent attempt to emphasise his readiness to rule. The disclosure of the marriage was seen as part of the process.
While Kim Jong-Il's wives were never pictured at official functions, "the regime is now facing a different situation, and the move is part of work to make Kim Jong-Un appear old and wise enough to rule", said Seoul-based online newspaper the Daily NK.
The aim is partly to show "he is not a child", said Chang Yong-Suk, of the Institute for Peace and Unification Studies at Seoul National University.
"If he went around alone, people would look down on him as a young lad, but with his wife present, he could show he is the head of the family and also an adult," Mr Chang said.
South Korea's JoongAng Ilbo newspaper, and other media, said Ms Ri is believed to be a former singer who came to the young Kim's notice during a performance.
Kim's father had singled her out as a potential first lady while working on his succession plan, JoongAng said.
Ms Ri is a Kim Il-Sung University graduate from the northeastern province of North Hamkyong and her father is an academic and mother a doctor, the paper said.
Kim appears fully in charge of his country, despite speculation he would rely on close advisers because of his youth and inexperience, the International Crisis Group think-tank said in a report this week.
But it said there was nothing to suggest he would take measures to improve the lot of his people amid severe food shortages, or reduce regional frictions over the North's nuclear and missile programs.

Science explains why men stare at women

Body image study

IT'S true: Women are objects - at least when it comes to the way men look at them.
And women are equal offenders, according to a study published in theEuropean Journal of Social Psychology.
Sarah Gervais, assistant professor and lead author of the study, said the brains of men and women both look at men as a "whole person".
"We don’t break people down to their parts, except when it comes to women, which is really striking. Women were perceived in the same ways that objects are viewed," she said.
"It could be related to different motives. Men might be doing it because they're interested in potential mates, while women may do it more of a comparison with themselves.
"What we do know is they're both doing it."

“We always hear that women are reduced to their sexual body parts; you hear about examples in the media all the time,” Gervais said.
“This research takes it a step further and finds that this perception spills over to everyday women, too.”
The study analysed the way men and women looked at images of both genders in a bid to determine what mental processes were being applied.
The study presented standardised images of clothed men and women to 227 subjects made up of equal numbers of both genders. They were shown a sequence of images before two images settled on their screen. One was an original image, the other simply showed the groin area.
The participants had to quickly point to which image they had seen before.

Men and women were more likely to recognise body parts when shown images of women. Both were more likely to recognise the whole image when shown pictures of men.
The data showed both men and women utilised a "global" psychological process when looking at images of men. But a more "local" process kicked in when looking at women.
Local processing defines the way we think about objects such cars, computers and houses.
Global processing defines a much more inclusive and broader "wrap" of all aspects related to a person.

Batman shooter warned of plans to kill

ALLEGED Colorado shooter James Holmes reportedly sent a warning package to a psychiatrist at his former university with a notebook and drawings of his plans to massacre people.
Holmes, 24, is accused of shooting 12 people dead and wounding 58 more at a cinema on Friday in Aurora, outside Denver, as young moviegoers packed the first midnight screening of the latest Batman film, The Dark Knight Rises.
There were conflicting reports about whether the package was received in time for the massacre to be averted. Officials remained tight-lipped on Wednesday on reports that it had lain unopened in a university mailroom for days.
Fox News, quoting an unnamed law enforcement source, said the parcel, with Holmes' name written in the return address box, arrived at the University of Colorado on July 12 but sat unopened until days after the July 20 massacre.
"Inside the package was a notebook full of details about how he was going to kill people," the law enforcement source said. "There were drawings of what he was going to do in it - drawings and illustrations of the massacre."
Those drawings included some of gun-wielding stick figures shooting other stick figures, the report said.
However, a second law enforcement source quoted by Fox News said the authorities had been unable to confirm that the package had arrived before the killings occurred. The Denver Post, meanwhile, cited university officials as saying it had arrived on Monday, days after the shooting.
A police source told NBC News that Holmes had tipped them off to the package and told them to look for his name in the return address.
A report also surfaced that the suspect, who is expected to be charged with 12 murders and 58 attempted murders at his next court appearance on Monday, bought a high-powered rifle hours after failing a key oral exam.
Awarded a special grant by the government for his neuroscience studies, Holmes suddenly dropped out of the program with no explanation three days after failing the June 7 exam, ABC News reported.
Officials are unable to comment publicly on any of these matters because of a strict gag order imposed by the judge overseeing the case.
The first funeral of a massacre victim took place on Wednesday, as President Barack Obama told an event in New Orleans that he would pursue "common-sense" measures to keep guns out of the hands of mentally ill people.
In a speech to the National Urban League said he believes that even most gun owners would agree "that AK-47s belong in the hands of soldiers, not in the hands of children".
"I believe the majority of gun owners would agree we should do everything possible to prevent criminals and fugitives from purchasing weapons. And we should check someone's criminal record before they can check out a gun seller.
"A mentally unbalanced individual should not be able to get his hands on a gun so easily. These steps shouldn't be controversial. They should be common-sense."
The gunman in last week's movie theatre shooting gained access via a fire exit shortly after the film began and threw two canisters of noxious gas into the auditorium, witnesses said.
After firing one round directly into the air with a pump-action shotgun, he began shooting people at random with a military-style assault rifle capable of dispatching 50 to 60 rounds a minute.
Authorities say Holmes - who had painted his hair reddish orange - claimed he was the Joker, Batman's sworn enemy in the comic book series that inspired director Christopher Nolan's film trilogy, which features British-born actor Christian Bale as "the caped crusader".
The suspect gave himself up outside the cinema, still clad in the body armour witnesses described the gunman wearing.

AN 11-year-old boy took an international flight without a ticket, passport or boarding pass.
Liam Corcoran was able to evade five security checks for the 2414km flight from Manchester, England, to Rome, Italy.
He boarded the Jet2.com flight LS791 yesterday. He was on his own, the Manchester Evening News reported.
The boy was only noticed when concerned passengers managed to get a message through to the cabin crew. He reached Rome but had tr remain on board the plane until it flew back to Manchester.
"This extremely serious matter is now being urgently investigated by officials from the airport and airline. It is clear that documentation has not been checked correctly at security and the boarding gate," a Manchester Airport spokesman told the paper.
"The boy went through full security screening so the safety of passengers and the aircraft was never compromised. We are now making preparations to ensure that his return to the UK is handled sensitively to avoid any distress."
Five Jet2.com staff members have been suspended, An accurate head count was not made of passengers on board the flight.
The boy had run away from his mother while they were shopping at Wythenshawe Civic Centre and managed to get to the airport, the newspaper reported.
"It was understood that Liam had followed a family when he got to the packed terminal 1, and that security staff scanned him but failed to realise he was on his own and had no boarding card," the report stated.
"He then went to one of the gates where passengers were boarding Jet2.com flight LS791 to Rome, and managed to get past a security check without showing a passport or boarding card."
The boy was met by his mother when he returned to Manchester Airport. She had been contacted after the plane reached Rome and Liam had revealed who he was.
