A US military fighter jet crashed into the sea off northern Japan on Sunday, Japanese public broadcaster NHK reported.
The F-16 jet crashed off Nemuro, some 1000 kilometres north of Tokyo, at around 12.30pm (AEST), the network quoted the Japan Coast Guard as saying, adding no further details of the accident were available.
The coast guard was not immediately available to confirm the report.
